오늘 알아볼 주얼러는 한스 브라슬러(Hans Brassler)입니다.
생몰연도는 좀 불확실합니다.
일단 생년은 1877년과 1882년, 두 가지가 있는데...
좀 더 상세하게 나온 기사쪽을 믿어볼까 합니다.
그래서 1882년입니다.
사망연도는 못 찾았습니다.
독일 출신으로, 애초에 금속 공예와 주얼러 집안이었다고 합니다.
교육은...여기에서 또 정보 출처마다 이야기가 다른데...

뮌헨에서 로얄 아카데미(현재 '뮌헨 미술 아카데미')를 다녔다.
이 아카데미는 무려 1808년 바이에른의 막시밀리안 1세 요제프가 설립한 예술학교로, 독일에서 가장 오래되었다고 하는군요.
심지어 지금도 있다고 합니다.
2. 프랑스 파리의 줄리앙 아카데미(Academie Julian)를 다녔다.
이 아카데미는 1867년에 로돌프 줄리앙이 설립한 사립 예술학교로 회화와 데셍, 조각 등을 가르쳤다고 합니다.
과연 어느쪽이 진실인지는 확인하지 못했습니다.
아니면 시간 차가 있을 뿐, 둘 다 진실일 수도 있겠습니다만...어쨌든 확인하지는 못했습니다.
아무튼 조각을 비롯해 예술을 배운 한스는 1900년 파리에서 개최된 만국 박람회에서 금상을 받아 그 재능을 증명했다고 합니다.
내용이 좀 더 상세하고 충실한 기사에 따르면 1902년에 미국으로 건너갔다고 합니다.
티파니에 입사해서 실력을 갈고 닦으며 경험을 쌓았고, 20세기 초 시대의 디자인 감각을 가다듬었습니다.
그리고 1909년에는 뉴저지 뉴어크에서 "브라슬러" 회사를 설립합니다.
부사장이자 디자인 총괄 감독이었다는 걸 보니 회사 운영은 다른 사람에게 맡겼나 봅니다.
한스 브라슬러의 디자인은 조각을 배운 사람답게 매우 입체적이고, 그리스 신화나 르네상스 예술 같은 요소를 많이 사용했습니다.
또한 초기에는 당대의 유행인 아르누보를 따르는 듯 했지만 갈수록 아르데코의 영향 또한 드러납니다.
사용하는 재료 또한 14k, 18k 같은 품위 높은 금과 자수정, 사파이어, 진주, 다이아몬드, 루비 등 고가의 재료는 물론, 라피스라줄리, 진주 같은 준보석도 폭넓게 사용하였습니다.
특히 유명한 게 스틱핀들입니다.
한스 브라슬러는 1916년 즈음까지는 "브라슬러 사"에 남아 있었지만, 그 이후에 어떻게 되었는지는 불명확합니다.
그래서 실제로 한스 브라슬러가 주얼리 업계에서 활동한 건 10년이 채 못되는 것 같습니다.
그리고 1933년에 회사는 다른 주얼리 기업에 넘어갔습니다.
그럼에도 불구하고 아직까지 이름이 남아 있고 경매장에서 다뤄질만큼, 그 존재감은 확실합니다.
아래는 블러드스톤(bloodstone)이라고, 요즘에는 거의 잊혀진 준보석입니다.
흑녹색 바탕에 피가 튄 것 같은 빨간 자국이 섞인 게 가장 일반적인 생김새입니다.
옛날에는 주술적인 의미에서 꽤 인기가 있었고, 원래 3월의 탄생석이기도 했습니다.
생김새가 그리 아름답지는 않은 탓에 아쿠아마린에 밀려서 이제는 아는 사람도 별로 없을 겁니다.
파라오 디자인이 유행하던 시기라서 디자인을 이렇게 뽑은 것 같습니다.
아래는 라피스라줄리입니다.
이건 아르누보보다는 아르데코의 영향이 더 큰 것 같군요.
이건 문스톤을 세팅한 스틱핀입니다.
이건 진주와 사파이어로 아르데코 디자인입니다.
이건 남자의 머리 위에 뿔이 달려서 그리스 로마 신화의 "판"이나 "사티로스"가 모티브인 줄 알았는데,
제목에는 바카날리안(bacchanalian), 즉 술의 신 바쿠스를 기리는 축제가 모티브인 것 같습니다.
술의 신을 기리는 거니까 술잔치죠...
보석은 자수정인데, 재미있는 건 "자수정을 가지고 있으면 술에 취하지 않는다"는 미신이 있었다는 겁니다.
이건 일부러 노린 조합이라고 밖에 볼 수 없군요.
녹색...칼세도니 속 녹옥수(크리소프레이즈)가 아닐까 싶네요.
상당히 깔끔한 디자인의 스틱핀입니다.
정면을 보면 디자인이 마냥 단순하지도 않군요.
한바퀴 꼬여서 휘감네요.
그런 스틱핀의 크기는...어라.
생각보다 더 작네요.
