오늘 조사할 주얼러는 버나드 인스톤입니다.생몰연도는 1891년부터 1987년입니다.이 분도 역시 미술공예운동 후기에 활동한 주얼러이며, 영국인입니다.매우 일찍부터 재능이 드러났던 분이네요.1

영국에서 태어났습니다.
1888년부터 1891년까지는 런던에서 존 단도 세딩(John Dando Sedding)이라는 건축가 밑에서 일을 했습니다.
원래는 작가가 되려 했다는데, 아버지의 반대로 건축으로 길을 바꾼 것 같습니다.
1890년 대에는 아버지의 섬유 회사가 소유한 곳을 개축하거나, 유아 학교나 가정집(cottage)를 설계했습니다.
마찬가지로 건축가 세딩의 조수로 일하던 헨리 윌슨이라는 직장 동료의 권유로 금속 공예를 배우기 시작했고,
1897년 쯤에는 런던 캠프덴힐에 아예 자기 공방을 차렸습니다.
다른 기사에서는 헨리 윌슨(Henry Wilson; 1864 ~ 1934)이 영향력 있는 금세공사였다고 나오네요.
듀얼 코어, 아니, 듀얼 잡(job)인가?
1899년에는 영국의 예술공예운동 작가로서 샤그린이라는 소재를 개척했습니다.
샤그린이란, 상어나 가오리 등 특정 어류의 가죽을 말하는데, 자잘할 돌기들이 나 있는 게 특징이라고 합니다.
저도 아주 옛날 젊을 때, 시장에 있는 은세공방의 쇼윈도에서 오돌도돌한 가죽 조각으로 장식된 펜던트를 본 기억이 납니다.
또한 같은 금속 공예 작가이자 2차 사촌(second cousin), 아니, 재종 사촌인 메이 모건 올리버(May Morgan Oliver)와 같이 작업을 했습니다.
재종 사촌...아버지나 어머니의 사촌의 자식, 그러니까 나의 육촌입니다.
나의 사촌은 아버지나 어머니의 형제자매의 자식이지만, 재종사촌은 친/외가의 할아버지의 형제자매의 손자...
요즘 우리나라에서는 잘 쓸 일이 없는 단어네요.
1900년부터는 주얼리를 만들기 시작하였습니다.
1901년에는 버밍엄 시립 예술 학교 금속공예 과의 교직을 맡아 버밍엄으로 이사했습니다.
그리고 동료 금속 공예 예술가인 메이 모건 올리버와 결혼하였고, 이 여성은 메이 모건 쿠퍼로 이름이 바뀌게 되었습니다.
(...니네 육촌이랑 결혼하니? 아라비안 나이트나 옛날 일본의 사촌 간 결혼도 거시기했지만, 육촌도 조금 거시기하네요.)
1904년부터 1907년에는 학과장까지 지낸 것으로 보입니다.
1906년에 아버지의 사망으로 유산을 물려받으면서, 교직을 그만 두었습니다.
그리고 이 해부터 일본의 모쿠메가네 기술로 작업을 시작하였습니다.
그리고 켄트 지역에서 아예 공방과 쇼룸이 딸려 있는 주택을 설계하여 지었습니다.

쿠퍼는 타조알, 코코넛 껍질, 외뿔고래의 이빨, 샤그린 같이 다양한 재료들을 시도하고, 금과 은, 구리, 보석과 준보석을 섞어 쓰는 게 특징이라고 합니다.
또한 디자인 모티브도 상상 속의 생물부터 중세 건축까지 매우 폭넓었다고 하네요.
아래는 중세와 켈트 디자인을 섞어서 만든 브로치입니다.
금으로 만들었고, 루비, 문스톤, 흑진주, 자개, 자수정, 크리소프레이즈를 세팅했습니다.
크기는 14센티에 9센티...상당히 크군요.
쿠퍼는 영국의 예술 공예 운동에서 빼놓을 수 없는 핵심 인물이기도 합니다.
윌리엄 모리스(William Morris)의 사상에 영향을 받아, 1893년부터 1908년에 걸쳐 개최되는 예술공예 전시에 한 번도 빠짐 없이 참석했습니다.
쿠퍼는 교회쪽에서도 주문을 상당히 받았습니다.
십자가라든가, 종교적 상징을 담은 목걸이라든가, 그런 작품들이 많이 있습니다.
1908년에는 미술 노동자 조합(Art Workers Guild)에도 가입했습니다.
1902년부터 1908년까지는 어니스트 김슨(Ernest Gimson)과 함께 금속 예술 작품을 만들기도 했습니다.
1908년부터 1915년에 만든 쿠퍼의 작품 중 상당 부분은 런던에 있는 세공인 조합(the Artficers' Guild)을 통해 판매되었습니다.
쿠퍼가 의뢰 받은 작품 중에 유명한 것은 얼 헤이그(Earl Haig)에게 수여된 명예의 검(the Sword of Honour)과,
당대 유명 배우 엘린 테리(~1928)의 화장한 유골을 담은 유골함입니다.
샤그린을 사용한 디자인으로 유명해진 쿠퍼는
1920년 대와 1930년 대에 샤그린이 사치품으로 인식되면서 더욱 유명해졌고,
주얼리와 금속 기물은 물론, 수채화 작품까지 만들었습니다.
쿠퍼는 버나드 인스톤은 물론 에드워드 내피어 히치콕 스펜서(Edward Napier Hitchcock Spencer)에게도 영향을 끼쳤습니다.
자신이 설계한 집에서 살다가 1933년에 사망했습니다.
그의 작품은 디자인쪽에서 압도적인 명성을 자랑하는 빅토리아 알버트 박물관을 비롯해 어려 곳에서 소장하고 있습니다.
