18세기 초부터 보석세공업에 종사해온 집안에서 태어나
1834년에 런던에 위치한 제임스 갈랜드 앤 워더스톤(James Garland & Watherston)에서 7년에 걸친 견습 생활을 시작했습니다.
1848년에 제임스 갈랜드(James Garland)가 사업에서 빠지고, 제임스 워더스톤(James Watherston)과 사업파트너가 되어 회사명이 워더스톤 앤 브로그든(Watherston & Brogden)이 되었습니다.
그러니까 이전 회사명이 제임스 갈랜드 앤 워더스톤(James Garland & Watherston)이었던 이유가...둘 다 제임스(James)라서 그랬던 건가요?
브로그든은 고전 스타일을 전문으로 했습니다.
당시 고대 메소포타미아 도시 니네베가 발굴되는 고고학 상 매우 큰 사건이 있었는데,
초기에는 프랑스가 발굴했지만, 약 1845년부터 영국도 본격적으로 발굴을 시작했습니다.
브로그든은 이 니네베의 유물에서 영감을 얻어 1851년 런던 전시회에서 고대 유물 스타일의 디자인을 선보였습니다.
1864년에 워더스톤이 은퇴하면서 사업은 온전히 브로그든의 것이 되었습니다.
고대 문명과 고전 시대 스타일을 따라한만큼,
뱀, 별, 리본 등의 빅토리아 시대 모티브를 많이 활용했습니다.
카메오, 모자이크, 에나멜 등도 많이 만들었습니다.
1860년 대 중반에 입사한 샬롯 뉴먼(Charlotte Newman)이 두각을 드러냈습니다.
브로그든 회사의 제품 중에는 샬롯 뉴먼의 이름이 새겨진 것도 있다고 합니다.
1867년에 파리 박람회에서,
1871년에 런던 박람회에서도 작품을 전시하여 수상했습니다.
브로그든은 그래뉼레이션, 즉 신라 금귀걸이에 쓰이는 누금 세공(조그만 구슬을 붙여서 장식하는 세공 기법)을 잘 했다고 합니다.
1878년 파리 박람회도 참가했습니다.
이때에는 금세공 작품으로 프랑스에서 레종 도뇌르 훈장까지 받았습니다.
1880년에 채링크로스(Charing Cross)의 그랜드 호텔 빌딩(Grand Hotel Building)으로 이사했습니다.
지하층에서 일하는 금세공사들을 볼 수 있었다고 하네요.
빅토리아 여왕의 아들 레오폴드 왕자로부터 왕실 허가증을 받았습니다.
1884년에 브로그든이 사망하면서 폐업했지만, 그 아래에서 일했던 샬롯 뉴먼(Charlotte Newman)이 자기 이름으로 사업을 열었습니다.
브로그든이 만든 것 중에 유명한 파라오 브로치입니다.
고대 유물에서 영감을 얻은 만큼, 브로그든은 이탈리아의 카스텔라니에게서도 영향을 받았습니다.
