오늘 알아볼 주얼러는 뤼시앵 가이야르, 프랑스인입니다.
생몰연도는 1861년부터 1942년입니다.
시대가 시대이니만큼 역시 제가 사랑해 마지 않는 아르누보 스타일로 작업하던, 금세공사였습니다.
할아버지 대부터 이어져온 세공사 집안으로, 아버지를 거쳐 뤼시앵 가이야르가 물려 받았습니다.
할아버지 대에는 구리를, 아버지 대에는 은을 주로 다뤘고, 뤼시앵 본인은 금을 다뤘지만 구리도 썼다고 하는군요.
뤼시앵의 형제 역시 유명한 아르누보 가구 디자이너였다고 합니다.
르네 랄리크와 동시대인이었네요. 아니, 어느 검색 결과에서는 르네 랄리크와 친구 사이로 나옵니다.
그리고 역시 일본 예술에 빠져 있었습니다.
사실 이 시대에는 프랑스를 비롯한 서유럽 지역에서 일본 예술이 대유행이었습니다.
중국풍, 시누아즈리가 유행했던 시기는 그보다 좀 더 전이었고요.
공방에 일본인을 고용하기도 했다고 하네요.
1889년에 국제 박람회에 출품하여 상을 받았고, 1892년에 아버지로부터 공방을 물려 받았습니다.
1893년 시카고 박람회에서는 심사위원을 지냈으며, 1902년에는 레종도뇌르 훈장까지 받았습니다.
집안에서 운영하는 공방에서는 꽃병, 지팡이 손잡이 등 주얼리 외에도 다양한 제품을 생산했습니다.
뤼시앵 가이야르 본인의 경우에는 작품마다 단 하나의 모티브만 사용하는 걸로 유명했다고 합니다.
확실히 조사한 작품 사진들을 보면 꽃이면 꽃, 곤충이면 곤충 한 가지만 있지, 꽃과 곤충이 같이 있거나 하는 게 없습니다.
뤼시앵의 작품들은 오르세 미술관, 메트로폴리탄 미술관, V&A 박물관에 소장되어 있다고 합니다.
